Overview

1966 BMW 2000ca project with Virginia title to include a 1968 BMW 2000cs parts car with great components and a nice extensive collection of hard to find and very rare 2000cs parts.  This 2000ca is an early summer 1966 build with matching chassis and engine VIN numbers 1000419 (Karmann chassis number 1,654 of 13,691 typ 120 chassis manufactured).  Turf green (73 code) with dark brown factory (code K13/05) vinyl interior.   Car originally from Arizona.   Rust issues that have been corrected came from sitting in weather at some point.  No road salt and water damage from wheel spray found. Inner fenders perfect.  All parts for complete reassembly included along with detailed instructions for reassembly.  Buyer has everything needed for an accurate, stress free and quality re-assembly.

Six-year restoration including complete disassembly with a rotisserie body restoration. Metal fabrication repairs include replacement panels from Germany and repurposed rust free e9 components.  Minimal fiber glass patching and metal-to-metal filler sparingly applied to non-structural areas measuring 0.955 inch (24.26 mm) or less to include headlight buckets and spare tire well.  All body metals repaired, stripped, treated with Picklex20 rust neutralizer (where necessary) and sealed with PPG DP 50LF epoxy two stage primer.

Exterior body panels

Exterior body panels are strait with paint removed using chemical paint stripper followed by minor filler if needed, glazing, boarding and epoxy primer sealer.  No oil canning or warping.  Body is ready for high build primer with maybe some final glazing, blocking, and paint.

Under Chassis

Under chassis areas media blasted with ground glass and sealed with 3 coats of epoxy primer. The only portions of the chassis still in need of finishing include the trunk area and portions of the cockpit surface metals.

Hood, Trunk Lid & Doors

Hood and trunk lid areas have not been touched, are rough and painted with a temporary short-term application to seal surfaces including mitigated surface rust and will need to be stripped to bare metal, minor dents addressed, and prepped for paint.  Doors are exceptional from a 1973 3.0cs and are rust free, strait, with no dents or repairs.  The body line horizontal seam and drop along the sides transitioning from the rear quarters, through the doors to the front fenders is perfect.

3.0cs Doors

The rust-free 3.0cs doors do reveal a poorly applied BMW nacht blau acrylic paint peeling off the factory original fjord finish and will need to be stripped and prepped for paint. These e9 doors are heavier with the US regulation mandated internal bracing compared to the marginally braced original typ120 doors (which are also included).

Engine, Drive Line and Suspension

Engine does not turn and is probably the reason this car was stored in the late 1970s.  Automatic transmission included but is not in the car.  Suspension is complete but will need to be rebuilt to include shocks, bushing, tie rods, and ball joints. The driver side rear shock has separated requiring the spring to be contained with a chain to keep the car level.    Original differential in car, with a spare included as well as the differential in parts car.

Interior

Interior is fair and will need to be refreshed.  The seats have several torn areas due to sun damage.  The dash is in poor condition but salvageable and will need to be re-glued and laminated.  Wooden grab bar in solid condition.  The dash in the parts car is in very good condition.

Chrome Trim and Lights

Chrome trim to include bumpers, rocker covers, hub caps, door and window trim in good condition.  Minor rust pitting in bumpers.   Car comes with the original US mandated headlights as well as a pair of European “cat’s eye” sealed beams in excellent condition.   Wiring harness has been reinstalled to the engine compartment, gauge cluster, steering column, ignition, and center console area. Every connection is tagged which comes with a detailed guide on connecting all electric components.  Wiring harness for doors, and trunk area are bagged and labeled but have not been arranged awaiting final restoration and installation.  Most of the mounting hardware for the beltline trim is intact.  The nose belt trim is embossed and is in excellent condition.  Included is typ120/e9 NOS roof line rain gutter chromed trim.

All Parts Included

All parts for reassembly are included and labeled for easy identification and installation to include an installation guide.   This includes all door components, rear window regulators with electric motors with switches, chrome trim, and upper door area multilayered arched trim.   All interior door panel components, carpet pieces, dash components, center console pieces, heater core/blower motor, glove box, under dash components, headliner, sun visors labeled for re-install.  The taillights inner reflectors with bulbs and reinstall guide, trunk elephant skin floors included.  The door locks correspond with the ignition key, and the trunk lock key is also present.

Glass

Complete set of replacement glass and windows all around located on parts car as well a separate rear greenhouse glass window and rear quarter window (both missing on parts car). Much of the original glass for the project car was broken out by vandals.

1966 2000cs Parts Car

1968 2000cs parts car has higher compression engine (9.3:1 compression ratio at 120 hp versus 2000c at 8.5:1 at 100 hp).  It has dual 40 Solex carbs, 4-speed manual transmission and possibly a limited slip differential.  Car parked due to debilitating rust in mid 1970s.  Engine odometer shows 60,000 miles and could be a good donor for project car. This car would be near impossible to restore but is valuable reference point for reassembly.  High points include:

  1. Intact airbox (with a new 2000cs emblem)
  2. Wood dash and trim in good condition but with some delamination
  3. Complete steering wheel to include center wood section and intact horn ring
  4. Center console good condition and complete to include original radio
  5. Belt trim complete, good condition (embossed nose and wing pieces in good condition and will packaged with project car)
  6. Bumpers, complete, good condition, need polishing
  7. Doors trim interior with electric windows with motors complete with all trim, hardware, ashtrays, handles and chrome, good condition but need cleaning, some chrome degradation
  8. Electric window motors front and back with switches
  9. Glass to include windshield, driver, and passenger side windows in good condition. Missing rear greenhouse window, and driver side quarter window (included separately with auction)
  10. Doors, hood, roof, and trunk lid with some rust but salvageable

Six Year Restoration Details

Rockers and pillar bases

Both outer rockers were replaced with replacement panels from Germany (including one OEM piece).  The middle rockers were rebuilt with repurposed e9 units in excellent condition.  A section of the inner rocker on the passenger side was repaired with a repurposed e9 piece in excellent condition.  The A and B pillar bases were replaced with new components from Germany.   All rocker pieces and pillar bases were treated with 3 coats of ZeroRust on inner facing panels prior to fabrication.   After fabrication, ZeroRust was applied again in completed areas.   The rear quarter panel metal tightly overlapping the outer rocker (an inherently bad design by Karmann) hidden by the chrome rocker covers was removed to fully expose the outer rocker drain saddle. This will allow for proper water drainage from the rear window seal areas.  See 35 Minute video Documenting Rocker Repair

Rear subframe mounting points

The rear subframe and suspension mounting shaft anchor points are solid and perfect as can be noted from the factory weld points as viewed from the backseat area as well as where the rotisserie is mounted to these points.  An area of rust was removed from the sheet metal near the passenger side mount with new metal fabricated and welded in place from beneath but also visible from the back seat area.

Differential mounting point

The boxed sheet metal frame that supports the differential is solid.  Because this is a noted vulnerability on 2000c/cs & e9s with differential torque causing cracks in the sheet metal, a reinforced “L- bracket” brace is fabricated and welded in place for extra rigidity.
A heavy gauge cross brace has been welded to the original sheet metal cross brace in the trunk to reinforce this key structural support for the body’s weight resting on the differential mount.

Floors

Both rear floor pans and a section of the passenger floor pan were replaced with panels from Germany.   Both inner sections of the seat bases and the metal concealed by the seats bases was sealed with three coats of ZeroRust prior to re-fitting.

Lower Nose sheet metal front bumper area

A common area for corrosive rust on the 2000c/cs.  Water is trapped by the front bumper brackets and also drains through the 32 vertical vents and center grills down to the sheet metal fold welded to the front lower brace.   All rusted and damaged sheet metal situated between the front bumper mounting points and beneath the center grills was removed with new metal fabricated, sealed with Zerorust and welded in place. The front crossing support was cleaned up and sealed with ZeroRust.  A follow up treatment of Zerorust was applied after final welding.  The front bumper mounting brackets were cleaned up, painted with black Zerorust, and new mounted hardware installed.

Undercarriage, Inner fenders and framing

All metal on the undercarriage and the inner fenders was stripped, surface rust removed, and 3 coats of epoxy primer applied. The upper wing metal was opened to allow access to remove surface rust and apply three coats of ZeroRust on the hidden shelfs where rust forms.
